Auto Maintenance Tips to Prevent Accidents

A poorly maintained vehicle can contribute to an accident, we've put together a few ways you can keep your vehicles in top condition.
Tires
9% of all car crashes in the US were followed by some issue with the tires of the vehicle (tread separation, under-inflation or blowouts). Well maintained tires improve gas mileage, the ability to stop properly and the handling of the vehicle in general.
Check the air pressure in the tires once a month, including the spare. Also, check for cracks in the sidewall and the amount of tread on the tires. You should rotate your tires every 6,000 miles and have an alignment done when needed to ensure even wear and extended life of your tires.
Brakes
Fewer accidents are caused by break failure than tires, but poorly maintained brakes still contribute to thousands of accidents every year. When brake pads wear down too far, they can damage the rotors, leading to costly repairs and possible break failure. Check your break pads and rotors annually. If you hear squeaking or scraping or your vehicle veers to one side or the brake pedal pulses when breaking you should take your vehicle in for repairs. These are signs of worn brakes and will lead to reduced braking capability.
Windows and Lights
Clear visibility gives you the extra time needed to react in an emergency. Keep your windows, inside and out, mirrors and lights clear of obstructions and as clean as possible. Check your lights once a month to make sure they are all in working order. You should also change your wiper blades every six months.
Fluids
A fluid leak can cause the steering wheel or brakes to stop working or even cause the entire engine to suddenly lock up or overheat. Check the following fluids to keep your vehicle running smoothly and prevent an unexpected mechanical failure while on the road:
Brake Fluid
Power Steering Fluid
Coolant
Transmission Fluid
In addition to preventing potential accidents, routine maintenance will save you thousands in expensive repairs.
